Engine
The engine in the 991.1 ‘Carrera’ models was a 3.4 litre flat six with 345bhp and naturally aspirated, the S model received a 3.8 litre engine with 400bhp. The GTS variant had the same 3.8 engine with Porsche’s ‘Powerkit’ which pushed power up to 430bhp. The Turbo and Turbo S models received a different 3.8 flat six with a twin turbo configuration that put out 520bhp and 560bhp respectively. The GT3 and RS models ran a naturally aspirated engine revving to 9,000rpm. The GT3 was a flat six with a 3.8 litre engine rated at 475bhp, whilst the RS and R had the 4.0 engine with 500bhp.
With the 991.2 facelift, arguably the biggest change of the whole facelift was that the Carrera and GTS models all went to a 3.0 flat six engine, with twin turbos. The Carrera was boosted to 370bhp, the ‘S’ 420 BHP and the GTS 450bhp. Whilst the engine was Turbo’d, unlike many forced induction engines it revs really freely and feels more naturally aspirated in character. The Turbo and Turbo S received power hikes to 540bhp and 580bhp (The Turbo S Exclusive had a further tweak to 600bhp.) In the GT3 (and Touring) the engine underwent a major overhaul and was taken to a 4.0 with 500bhp, whilst the RS and Speedster engines were pushed to 520bhp with a similar major overhaul, all maintaining the naturally aspirated induction system. The GT2RS was introduced with the most powerful engine Porsche have ever put into a road car with a 3.8 litre twin turbo with 700bhp. At the time of writing this model is still the most powerful road going model (December 2022.)
