Common Porsche Cayman and Boxster Servicing Issues Across the 987, 981 and 718 Models
If you own a Porsche Cayman or Boxster, chances are your already aware you’re driving one of the most well-balanced performance cars Porsche’s ever made. Mid-engine layout, razor sharp handling, and just enough practicality to justify it to yourself (and anyone else who may question your life choices).
But while these cars have a strong reputation for reliability, they’re not immune to wear and tear. And when it comes to Porsche Cayman servicing, Porsche Boxster servicing, or anything across the 987, 981 and 718 generations, understanding the common issues can save you time, money, and a fair bit of head-scratching.
We see these cars come through every day from well-loved daily drivers to weekend toys, so we’ve pulled together a straightforward guide to what typically crops up and what to keep an eye on.

Why Regular Servicing Matters (More Than You Might Think)
Porsche didn’t build these cars to sit still; they’re meant to be driven regularly and enthusiastically. But that also means components are under constant stress, especially on UK roads (which, if we’re honest, aren’t exactly Silverstone-smooth).
Routine Porsche 987, 981 and 718 servicing isn’t just about ticking boxes in a service book. It’s about:
- Maintaining performance
- Preventing small issues turning into expensive ones
- Protecting long-term value
Skip servicing, and things won’t dramatically explode overnight they just quietly degrade until something finally gives up at the worst possible moment. Usually when you’re already late!
Cooling System Wear
Across all three generations, the cooling system is a key area to monitor. Radiators and condensers sit low in the front bumper, which makes them excellent at cooling and equally excellent at collecting leaves, road debris, and the occasional small animal. Over time, this can lead to corrosion and reduced efficiency. Some common signs are:
- Rising engine temperatures
- Coolant loss
- Visible corrosion on radiators
On 987 models in particular, age-related wear is now a major factor, while 981 and 718 cars can still suffer due to blocked airflow rather than outright age. Preventative maintenance here is simple but important: regular inspection and cleaning can go a long way in avoiding costly replacements. Having grilles installed over the intakes is a popular solution to the blockage problem, if you are interested in this upgrade, get in touch with our team.
Suspension and Steering Components
Classic Porsche handling characteristics are one of the main reasons people buy these cars so when suspension components start to wear, you may notice:
- Worn control arms and bushes
- Knocking noises over bumps
- Uneven tyre wear
- Steering that feels less precise than it should
On Porsche 981 services, we often see wear beginning to show in suspension components as cars rack up mileage. On 987 models, it’s even more common due to age.

Brake System Maintenance
These cars are built to stop just as well as they go but that performance can come at a cost. Brake discs, pads, and fluid all require attention, particularly if the car is used for spirited driving or track days. When brake system components wear, we see:
- Worn-out discs and pads
- Brake judder or vibration
- Degraded brake fluid affecting pedal feel, (mushiness)
Ignoring brake maintenance is never a great idea. It’s one of those systems where “I’ll sort it later” quickly turns into “I really should have sorted that earlier.”
Coil Packs and Ignition Components
A common issue across all three generations and one we deal with during Porsche Cayman servicing and Porsche Boxster servicing. Coil packs are exposed to heat and road conditions, which can cause them to crack or fail over time. Symptoms can include:
- Misfires
- Rough running
- Engine warning lights
987 models are particularly known for this, but it’s something we still check routinely on 981 and 718 cars as part of preventative maintenance.
Air Conditioning System Faults
Not the most glamorous part of the car, but definitely one you’ll miss if it stops working especially during the two weeks of British summer! These can present themselves as:
- Failed condensers (again, front-mounted and exposed to potential blockage)
- Leaks in the system
- Weak or warm airflow
This is another area where debris buildup plays a big role, particularly on the 987 and 981 models.

Generation-Specific Considerations
While there’s plenty of overlap, each generation has its own quirks:
987 (2004–2012)
- Now firmly in the “age-related maintenance” phase of their life
- Suspension, cooling components, and ignition parts are common wear items
- Regular servicing is key to keeping these cars sharp, especially as time goes on
981 (2012–2016)
- Generally very robust, but suspension and cooling systems still need attention
- Benefits greatly from a proactive servicing schedule
718 (2016–2025)
- More modern and refined, but still requires proper maintenance
- The turbocharged engines add complexity, making accurate diagnostics essential
- Routine servicing ensures long-term reliability

Why Experience Matters
You can service a Cayman or Boxster anywhere but diagnosing them properly is another story. At RPM Technik, we’ve spent 25 years working exclusively with Porsches meaning that:
- We know what to look for before it becomes a problem
- We can diagnose faults quickly and accurately
- We understand the differences and nuances between each generation
- We focus on preventative maintenance, not just reactive fixes
