Buying a Porsche is one of the most exciting decisions a car enthusiast will make. Whether you’re searching for your first or adding a carefully selected GT model to a growing collection, the purchase process demands a bit more than just enthusiasm, it requires knowledge.

That’s where a professional pre-purchase inspection comes in. At RPM Technik, we carry out comprehensive Porsche pre-purchase inspections in our Hertfordshire workshop, covering everything from classic air-cooled models to the latest GT cars and beyond. We treat your PPI with the same attention to detail as we would for our own sales stock for complete peace of mind.

What Is a Pre-Purchase Inspection?

A pre-purchase inspection (PPI) is an independent, complete assessment of a vehicle you’re considering buying. Rather than relying solely on a seller’s description or a brief test drive, you commission a qualified specialist to examine the car thoroughly before any money changes hands. For Porsche buyers in particular, a PPI isn’t a sign of distrust it’s proper due diligence, a classic example of “trust but verify”. Porsches are complex, precision-engineered machines. The higher the value of the car, the more costly an oversight could prove.

What Does RPM Technik’s Inspection Cover?

Our pre-purchase inspection checklist is exceptionally thorough with a total of 240 assessment points, and takes around three to five hours to complete.

The process involves four core elements:

  • Ramp Inspection

With the car lifted, our technicians can examine the underside in detail, removing undertray and wheels. Comprehensive assessment for corrosion, accident damage, fluid leaks, wear to suspension and steering components, and any evidence of potential previous repairs.

  • Diagnostic Interrogation

As a Porsche Partner Network member, we have access to PIWIS factory diagnostic equipment. This allows us to interrogate the car’s ECU for any stored fault codes, mileage data anomalies, and any inconsistencies that could indicate tampering or previous issues.

  • Cosmetic Review with Paint Depth Analysis

A detailed inspection of the bodywork is carried out, including paint depth measurements across all panels. Any significant deviations in paint thickness can indicate previous accident potential repair work or a respray, even on cars that may look flawless to the naked eye.

  • Road Test

A technician drives the car under real-world conditions to assess engine response, transmission behaviour, braking performance, steering feel, and any unusual sounds that would not be identifiable from a static inspection. The road test can often be the most revealing step of the PPI.

Why Does Specialist Knowledge Matter?

Not all specialists are created equal. What sets us apart is deep familiarity with Porsche models across every generation, forged over our 25 years in business. Our technicians know the common and uncommon failure points, age-related wear patterns, and model-specific issues that a generalist might miss entirely. That means we’re not just checking boxes; we’re actively looking for the things that matter most on the specific car in front of us. A 996 Carrera will have a whole different set of things to look out for when compared to a 991.1 GT3, an air-cooled 911 carries different risks to a 981 Cayman. Our technicians know what to look for on all of them.

Engine Assessments: Going Deeper When It Matters

For buyers who want even greater peace of mind or where a car warrants closer scrutiny (especially in the case of classics) We offer a range of additional engine assessments:

Bore Scope Inspection (from £210 +VAT)

A camera is used to inspect the internal surfaces of the combustion chamber. This can reveal any scoring, carbon build-up, or other conditions not visible through standard diagnostics.

Cylinder Loss Test (from £210 +VAT)

Commonly used on Porsches air-cooled engines, this test measures whether compressed air escapes past valves or piston rings a reliable indicator of internal wear. It can also a valuable test on water-cooled engines.

Cylinder Compression Test (£70 +VAT when combined with the above)

This measures combustion chamber pressure at top dead centre, providing a snapshot of overall engine health and helping identify cylinders that may be underperforming relative to the rest.

These tests are priced individually but can be combined with a standard PPI if the car warrants it and on high-value purchases, they frequently do.

Pricing

Our pre-purchase inspections are priced as follows:

  • Water-cooled pre-purchase inspection from £480 +VAT
  • Air-cooled pre-purchase inspection from £700 +VAT

The difference in pricing reflects the additional complexity and time required for air-cooled cars, this is often the case on older cars as they have had decades longer to develop issues that need thorough assessment. To put that in perspective: on a car worth £80,000 or £800,000 the cost of an inspection is a minor detail compared to the cost of buying a car with hidden problems that could have untold costs in the future.

Buying from a Private Seller or Non-Specialist Dealer?

This is exactly when a PPI becomes most important. Porsche main dealers and established specialists stake their reputation on every car they sell. Private sellers and generalist dealers are less predictable.

The good news is that most genuine sellers will have no objection to a buyer requesting an independent inspection. We can work around you and your buying process, the car simply needs to be brought to our premises in Long Marston, Hertfordshire for its PPI. If a seller is unwilling to allow an independent inspection, that can be a serious red flag.
