The 992 GT3 RS arrives from the factory about as track-focused as a road-legal car can get: active aero, a motorsport-derived chassis, and the iconic, naturally aspirated flat-six, red-lining 9,000rpm. It’s a complete package. But as we’ve had countless 992 GT3 RS’s come through our workshop alongside the many RS’s run by our RUSH club members, we know what owners need when looking to sharpen the car further.

Whether the goal is outright track pace, everyday usability, or simply making the most of every session. In no particular order, here’s a short list of upgrades we consistently recommend:

Akra992 Exhaust 18

1. Akrapovic Titanium Slip-On Exhaust

The GT3 RS’s factory exhaust is no shrinking violet (although, no doubt Porsche would have made it louder, had European regulations allowed), but a titanium slip-on system from Akrapovic helps to sharpens things further in two crucially important ways: weight and sound.

It’s titanium construction means a meaningful reduction in mass, over the rear axle compared with the standard system (3.5kg to be precise), exactly the kind of saving that matters on a car this focused on outright dynamics. Acoustically, the slip-on opens up a harder-edged, more motorsport-flavoured note, particularly at higher revs, while remaining civilised enough for road use. The quality of Akrapovic’s exhausts is unrivalled, with the system providing not just an OEM+ sound, but looking in-line with the original system (although with a lovely golden shade of titanium) It’s one of the most popular bolt-on upgrades we fit to clients GT3s.

As with any exhaust modification, we would recommend checking the noise limits for any track-days you may be attending, although the Akra systems generally do not have any issues and an accompanying titanium exhaust silencer is available if necessary.

2. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R Tyres

The incredible grip that the GT3 RS’s suspension, aero, and geometry are only as good as the contact patch putting them to the road. The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R is the more track-focused sibling of the standard Cup 2, developed with a firmer, more motorsport-oriented construction and compound aimed at drivers who spend serious time on circuit.

For a car built around this much downforce and mechanical grip, the Cup 2 R is the tyre most likely to let the chassis genuinely show what it can do, particularly in terms of front-end bite and confidence under high lateral load. It comes at the usual trade-off of reduced wet-weather performance and tread life versus the standard Cup 2, so it’s worth thinking honestly about how the car will be used before specifying a full set. (Or having a second wheel set fitted with the Pilot Sport S 5s for those soaking wet track days)

3. Performance Brake Pads

Under heavy braking is where a GT3 RS asks the most of its hardware, and the factory pads; whilst perfectly capable for road use, start to show their limits once you’re lapping consistently. We have also found that due to new eco regulations, the Porsche factory brake pads are not as robust as they once were. This can lead to quick wear and cracking, especially during track use. Upgrading to a track-proven compound matched to how the car is actually used makes a real difference to pedal feel, fade resistance, and stopping consistency lap after lap.

Our recommendations for the GT3 RS are either the Manthey pads or Pagid RSC1s, both offering genuinely unchallenged performance across road and track use without the compromises that come with a more single-minded race compound. They retain predictable bite and modulation when cold, which matters for the drive to the circuit and back, while holding their stopping power deep into a track session as temperatures climb. Paired with a set of braided brake lines and performance fluid, it’s one of the greatest ways to build real confidence into the car’s braking performance before you touch anything else.

4. Porsche Motorsport Camber Blocks

For drivers chasing lap times and personal bests whether that be around Silverstone or the Nordschleife, you’ll know the importance of a sharp, aggressive geometry setup. The GT3 RS on its standard suspension hardware can be setup for a maximum of 2.5 degrees negative camber on the front, which for most will already be more than enough to tighten and make for a razor-sharp front end feeling.

However, for those few that are in search of the next level driving experience, the Porsche Motorsport camber blocks are available, this adjusts the angle of the suspension components allowing up to 3.8 degrees of negative camber, an over 50% improvement on adjustability. The results? Keeping more of the front tyre’s contact patch loaded through hard cornering for sharper turn-in and reduced understeer. Best paired with a Cup 2 R or other semi-slick, N rated tyre.

5. Garmin Catalyst

Getting the most out of a GT3 RS on track is as much about the driver as the car, and the Garmin Catalyst 2 is one of the most useful tools we’ve seen for closing that gap. It’s a window-mounted performance optimiser with a built-in camera that uses Garmin’s True Optimal Lap technology to show you the fastest lap you could realistically drive, stitched together from the best sector performances you’ve actually achieved. Real-time coaching cues, post-session analysis that automatically flags your top areas for improvement, and leaderboard comparisons against other drivers make it a genuinely useful coaching tool rather than just another data logger.

6. Garmin Catalyst R1

A natural companion to the Catalyst 2, the Garmin Catalyst R1 is a rear-facing racing radar rather than a coaching device. It uses cockpit-mounted heads-up indicator lights, positioned in the driver’s natural line of sight, to flag faster cars approaching from behind without forcing a glance at the mirrors. Built to IP67 dust and water resistance for track use, it’s aimed squarely at drivers doing wheel-to-wheel sessions where situational awareness behind the car matters as much as what’s happening ahead.

Other Upgrades Worth Considering

Beyond the six upgrades above, here’s a handful of other items worth putting on your list when refining a 992 GT3 RS:

  • Manthey braided brake lines – these reduce flex in the braking system, therefore providing a firmer, more positive and most importantly, completely reliable pedal feel.
  • Performance brake fluid – this goes hand in hand with the braided brake lines. Performance brake fluid has a significantly higher boiling point than standard fluid (up to 328°C) meaning that when under strain in track scenarios, it maintains a linear and predictable pedal feel.
  • Schroth Seatbelt Anchor – Another one for our track-going clients, the seat belt anchor is available for all Porsches fitted with Schroth racing harnesses. It provides a place to secure the three-point seatbelt whilst using the harness, keeping the seat belt from knocking into your carbon bucket seat whilst taking sharp corners.

For Manthey RS Owners: Champion Motorsport Rearview Mirror

If your GT3 RS has been fortunate enough to have undergone the Manthey treatment, there’s one further upgrade worth knowing about. Anyone who’s spent time behind the wheel of a 992 GT3 RS MR will know the problem: the factory rearview mirror gives a superb view of absolutely nothing, it’s the issue of the rear window being replaced with a carbon panel and shark fin. This is a trade-off most owners accept as the price of admission for that level of aerodynamic performance, right up until they’re trying to change lanes on the M40 or reverse out of a tight paddock spot.

The Champion Motorsport rearview mirror is the most elegant solution to this niche issue. It is a direct replacement of the interior mirror, changing to a switchable mirror/ digital screen that connects to the new camera unit which sits underneath the carbon shark fin, restoring meaningful visibility without changing the character of the cabin or adding any extra clutter. For an MR that’s as likely to be driven to breakfast as it is to a track day, that’s a genuinely useful piece of everyday usability you’ll regain.
