GT CUP UPDATE: BRANDS HATCH 17-18TH MAY
The 18th and 19th of May saw the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds of the Bute Motorsport GT Cup Championship double header at Brands Hatch on the GP circuit.
The week prior to the event went to plan, we carried out a few tweaks to the GT3 as per the debrief with Nigel and Gary, thankfully Ollie and Stu finished up on schedule. (No 4am finish this week!) The truck was packed ready on Friday night to go down and set up before Saturday’s race, with some glorious weather promised the weekend looked like it could be something special.
The 997 competes in the GTB class which has a strong contingent of fellow Ex Carrera Cup GT3’s along with the odd M3 GTR and even an M6 endurance racer. Nigel qualified into 17th place but a pierced radiator forced a speedy change before the race calling Ollie and Stu into action in sweltering weather on an already red hot 911. The race went from strength to strength with Nigel climbing back up into 2nd in class but a late spin resulted in dropping a few places. As the chequered flag was dropped a very strong 6th in class was the final result, not a bad race all in all.
Sunday saw the next race which Nigel qualifying the car in 15th on the grid and again sliced through the field and finished a very satisfying 3rd in class, a tremendous result proving Nigel’s competitive race pace. The final race of the weekend was the sprint race to which Gary was at the helm, qualification in 21st place was always going to be a tough hill to climb but true to his excellent race craft and the pace of the GT3 he finished in a solid 4th in class.
The 7th, 8th and 9th rounds will be held on the Silverstone International circuit on June 7th and 8th. Why not come down and cheer on Nigel, Gary and team RPM Technik!
Thanks again to Chris Valentine for the awesome photography.
