LE MANS CLASSIC 2014
RPM organised its bi-annual pilgrimage down to Le Mans Classic early in 2014, the initial response was brilliant with 28 friends and customers confirming they were coming it booked out quickly. The plan was to go down on the Thursday night and return on Monday night, this would ensure we could take in the all important Le Mans Classic racing, some excellent driving roads, superb restaurants and above all some memorable times!
Everyone met up at Portsmouth for the overnight ferry to Caen, amazingly everyone arrived on time and boarded with out issue (even Mr Anderson!) An overnight ferry ensured everyone had time to catch up and get to know one another, lots of beer and wine all round equalled a good nights sleep and fresh(ish) faces for the new day.
On departing the ferry the RPM party had the first rendezvous point in Aunay Sur Odon for a continental breakfast and to recount tales from the night before, the stunning Hotel de la Place provided the venue and France kindly provided some stunning weather that ensured the next leg of the journey was memorable for both drivers and passengers. There was a quick stop in the medieval town of Domfront for refreshments, removal of the bugs from splattered windscreens and the convoy of Porsches were ready to rock. The final stop for the evening was in St Leonard des Bois, which is conveniently located at the bottom of a gorge which meant plenty of switchbacks and hairpins for everyone to exercise the revs!!
The rest of the day was spent chilling out and then a lovely meal with everyone in the restaurant ‘St Leo’.
Race day! Due to a pretty excellent night out, that perhaps went on longer than expected, the bright and early start was slightly delayed to a mid morning departure to the Le Mans circuit which resulted in a 1 and a half hour queue to get into the circuit. Lesson learnt for 2016! Everyone was lead directly to the Porsche hospitality tent where goodie bags and drinks tickets were duly handed out and everyone dispersed to their elected viewing point. Racing started at 17.00 and a lot of people stayed watching through to midnight to see the Grid 6 cars which were Porsche 935’s, Porsche 911 RSR’s amongst many other awesome machinery. Our party then slowly made their way back to Hotel Touring and got some well needed sleep.
The final day of racing concluded around 17.00 and then a lovely meal back at the Hotel celebrated Tony House’s birthday and rounded off the brilliant weekend.
The final trip back to Caen where we all had lunch and then boarded the afternoon return to Portsmouth was a more relaxed affair than the outgoing trip and some weary Porsche fans made their way back home.
A big thank you to all who attended and many thanks for your letters & flowers, we need to find a place to display this kind of thing!! Look forward to organising another trip for the 2016 Le Mans classic, and if you want to attend please make sure you get in early to avoid disappointment!
